Sergeant Chef of the 1er RE wearing the mle 1946 pattern battle dress uniform with the full dress uniform items added, this battle dress uniform was based on the British battledress of WWII, all of the embellishments are still worn today with the exception of the brown leather belt, this has now been replaced by a olive web belt,(or on occasions white plastic). The unit is identified by the left pocket insignia, rank in this case by the kepi noir, three gold chevrons worn on both sleeves and also by the gold braid edging on the fringed shoulder boards( épaulettes de tradition) worn by ranks cpl-chef up to sous officers, there was an modern variation of this uniform introduced in the early 1980s but was only use for a short time.

Caporal Chef 1er RE Tenu de Parade Winter Dress (1968-1990)

The unit is easily identified as the 1er regiment etranger by the diamond shaped pocket fob, with a white background and red and green saltire, on which there is a black eagle and green snake. the rank in this case has three chevrons two green with one gold above, The ecussons differ slightly from other Legionnaires in that pioneers have crossed axes on their right ecusson, this corporal chef wears the NCOs epaulettes de tradition with gold crescents, also worn are the white gloves and gauntlets and white NCOs Kepi, not worn is the blue sash, web belt, and weapons as they are replaced by the axe and apron on which the medals are worn.
NB. The axe is carried over right shoulder and not the left as in this example, also of note no chinstrap is worn as Pioneers are almost always bearded in the legion
