US Navy 1984 pattern short sleeve order summer white Indoor duty uniform is that of a Petty Officer 3rd class pay grade E 4, his speciality is that of a sonar operator indicated by the headphones and arrow insignia above the chevron worn on his left sleeve.

The occasion of wear for this uniform would be worn in summer for office work, watch standing, liberty (shore leave) or if uniform of the day

(Trouser belt buckle and tip in this example should be silver not gold as gold would indicate CPO or above , and white crew neck under-shirt would be worn. I believe this style of uniform has now been replaced by a khaki shirt, black trousers, and black garrison cap)
